The Simano Tiagra 50W LRS reels are nearly bullet-proof with their specially treated stainless steel ball bearings that are more corrosion resistant than standard stainless steel by a factor of 10. The Tiagra's spools are machined from cold-forged aluminum, lending to its extreme durability even under heavy drag loads. And speaking of drag – I have heard that the Tiagra 50W has the exact same drag system and capabilities of the 80W, without the weight and added cost! This also means that you can spool it with 80lb line to take advantage of the added drag pressure, making it a tremendous stand up reel for any boat.
The screws on the side plate are chromed prevent corrosion. With 2 sets of gears which are always engaged, gear ratio changes are quick and easy, even under load. I know the pain and embarrassment of losing a fish due to improper drag setting. The problem of the drag lever backing off because boat vibration has been eliminated which allows for more precise control. Drag surface is effectively doubled with the Tiagra's dual drag disks and floating drag plate. This combination provides a wide range of drag settings thus increasing long-term durability. When a fish bites, the tension on the freespool increases as the clicking alarm is activated. The Septon handle grip is soft to the touch yet still lives up to the Shimano name. Oh, I don't know how they did it but the handle isn't slippery when wet. Parts are well lubricated and protected with the metal frame keeps all moving parts in alignment. Machined from solid aluminum stock, the frames are incredibly rigid and strong allowing extremely low tolerances.
I really can't say enough about this reel – I know many offshore fishermen who outfit their entire boat with them.
